 As a fungicide, algicide, microbiocide, and disinfectant, methylene bis(thiocyanate) is also employed. End-use products are produced as a ready-to-use liquid, a soluble concentrate, and a powder.


Water cooling systems, the production of paint, metalworking cutting fluids, pulp and paper mills, oil drilling/mud packing fluids, leather processing, wood pressure treatments (forest products), wood protection treatments for buildings/products, and latex paints are all industries that use methylene bis(thiocyanate) (in-can). The chemical is administered using applicator rolls, brushes, chemical pumps, dip tanks, drip feeders, metering pumps, rollers, sprayers, sprinkler cans, or directly from tanks.


In the United States, methylene bis(thiocyanate) was originally authorised in 1949 as an active pesticide component. For methylene bis, an antimicrobial data call-in was issued in March 1997. (thiocyanate).


 As a part of the Phase 4 reregistration in June 1991, a second Data Call-In was issued. In June 1993, the Agency issued a third Data Call-In for environmental fate information on aquatic exposure. In April 1997, a fourth Data Call-In for inhalation toxicity data was released. There are 59 registered methylene bis(thiocyanate) products at the moment.


The industrial chemical methylene bis (thiocyanate) has demonstrated its superiority as a tool for the management of a wide range of industrial microorganism species. When correctly prepared, it has been used to successfully remediate microbial contamination in industrial systems, including cooling towers and paper mills.


At concentrations of no more than a few parts per million, it is highly efficacious. It has the ability to manage a wide range of bacteria present in many industrial systems and is not only effective at low dosages.


It is typically made by reacting an appropriate dihalomethane, such as methylene bromide, with an alkali metal thiocyanate while employing an organic solvent, such as dimethylformamide, as the solvent system. Long reaction conditions were necessary for the reaction, which resulted in low yields of the intended product. For the end product to be sufficiently pure for commercial usage, extensive alcohol purifications are necessary. A completed product contaminated with polymeric or resinous compounds of unknown composition was created by all reactions carried out by previous workers.


 Methylene bis (thiocyanate) has been exceedingly expensive and has only been used in a small quantity of large-scale commercial applications as a result of the numerous challenges involved in synthesising it using standard organic preparative procedures.


It becomes clear that if a less expensive method were available to produce methylene bis (thiocyanate) of a satisfactory grade, its adaptability to microorganism control in industrial process systems would be significantly increased, giving a larger segment of industry access to the many benefits obtained by using this remarkable microbiocide. Therefore, it becomes a goal of the innovation to offer a better, more practical technique for generating methylene bis (thiocyanate).
