  What is acetyl chloride?  Acetyl chloride is also called ethanoyl chloride and is a colourless, fuming liquid possessing a pungent odour. It happens to be an organic compound with the formula CH3COCl. How is it formed?  Acetyl chloride can be formed by reacting acetic acid with thionyl chloride (SOCl2) or phosphorus trichloride (PCl3). The reaction involves the replacement of the hydroxyl group (-OH) of acetic acid with a chlorine atom, resulting in the formation of acetyl chloride and hydrogen chloride gas. The chemical equation for the reaction between acetic acid and thionyl chloride is: CH3COOH + SOCl2 → CH3COCl + SO2 + HCl Similarly, the reaction between acetic acid and phosphorus trichloride can be represented as: 2 CH3COOH + PCl3 → 2 CH3COCl + H3PO3 In both cases, the reaction is exothermic, and the acetyl chloride formed is a colourless liquid that is usually purified by distillation.
